Strengthening Governance for The Future

One of the Canadian Quarter Horse Association Governance Committee’s major projects in 2021 was a complete review and modernization of the organization’s by laws and governance processes. The committee aimed to have the updated by laws approved by the Board of Directors in time for the 2021 Annual General Meeting. However, due to the size and complexity of the review process, the revised by laws were not finalized in time for formal approval and distribution with the meeting agenda.

As a result, Canadian Quarter Horse Association BY-LAWS #5 were presented at the Annual General Meeting for discussion purposes only and were later scheduled for further review during a general meeting held at the Canadian AQHA Summit on March 25–27.

Additional Governance Committee Initiatives

In addition to the by law review, the Governance Committee also focused on several key initiatives, including:

  • Drafting and approving the Governance Committee Terms of Reference
  • Reviewing and approving terms of reference for several standing committees
  • Developing and approving the Discipline, Complaints, and Appeal Process Policy
  • Reviewing major Equestrian Canada policy documents for reference and guidance

Equestrian Canada Policy References

As an industry affiliate of Equestrian Canada, the Canadian Quarter Horse Association sought Board approval to reference several important Equestrian Canada policies when specific Canadian Quarter Horse Association policies were not already in place, including:

  • Equestrian Canada Code of Conduct and Ethics
  • Equestrian Canada Conflict of Interest Policy
  • Equestrian Canada Abuse Policy
  • Equestrian Canada Safe Sport Policy
  • Equestrian Canada Concussion Policy
  • Equestrian Canada Social Media Policy

Supporting Stronger Organizational Leadership

Through these initiatives, the Canadian Quarter Horse Association Governance Committee continues to strengthen organizational structure, improve operational efficiency, and support the long-term success of the association and the Quarter Horse industry in Canada.
